Expert and Gentle Tooth Extraction in Nairobi

Tooth extraction or tooth removal is the medical procedure of removing a tooth from the mouth. It is beneficial to people with teeth that cannot be saved with restorative dental procedures. For people whose teeth are severely affected by decay and nothing can be done to save them, dental extraction is recommended to prevent further oral complications. Also, the tooth should be removed if it is infected or vulnerable to infection. Having your tooth pulled is one of the last things anyone wants. However, sometimes it’s just unavoidable. At Arrow Dental Centre, we have a dentist who understands how to make you comfortable during the extraction procedure.

When Tooth Extraction is Necessary

While dentists always aim to save your natural teeth, there are situations where tooth removal is the best option. If you have extensive infection or decay, extraction can provide immense relief and prevent further oral complications. Our dental clinic in Nairobi provides professional teeth extraction, serving residents within and outside the city. When you undergo extraction to remove the compromised tooth, we can also offer tooth replacement options such as a dental bridge to fill in the remaining gap.

There are several common reasons why a tooth extraction may be recommended:

  • An impacted wisdom tooth
  • A severely infected tooth that cannot be treated with root canal therapy
  • A tooth that is severely damaged by injury or decay
  • A baby tooth that has not come out before the permanent tooth grows in
  • Overcrowding that requires teeth to be removed before orthodontic treatment

The Next Step: Replacing Extracted Teeth

There are two types of dental extraction, simple extraction, and surgical extraction.

  • simple dental extraction is suitable in cases where the teeth to be removed can be seen and are feasible and accessible. In this procedure, the tooth can be extracted without the need to file or remove the bone.
  • In a surgical tooth extraction, some parts of the bone have to be removed to get to the tooth. Typically, an incision is made into the connective tissue to access the affected tooth. A situation where the bone to be removed has not erupted out of the bone requires a surgical procedure. Given the complexity of surgical extractions and the pain associated with the procedure, general anesthesia is needed.
  • Take prescribed pain killers discomfort that you might experience after the procedure.
  • Apply a cold compress with an ice pack on the side of the face to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing, smoking, or consuming alcoholic beverages on the first day as it might affect the healing process.
  • After the first 24 hours, you should rinse the mouth with warm salt water 2 times a day.
  • Gently brush and floss the remaining teeth, avoiding the extraction site.
  • Stick to soft foods like soup or yogurt and avoid hot liquids to prevent irritation. Also, ensure you stay hydrated.

An extracted tooth should be replaced as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might develop oral health issues such as tooth erosion, misaligned teeth, jaw pain, shifting teeth, or even Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder due to the missing teeth. At Arrow Dental, we provide various teeth replacement options to fill the gaps. They include:

  • dental bridge is a suitable option to enhance your smile and prevent dental complications.
  • Dental implants can be used to anchor dentures and crowns in place. Since implants are attached directly to your jawbone, they’re reliable and durable. Also, they give you a natural feel and look as well as help to save your jaw and facial structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to most commonly-asked questions about our dental clinic.

Prophylaxis also known as regular cleaning is a procedure that involves the dentist removing stains, plaque, and tartar from the teeth. This procedure is done twice a year, particularly for people with healthy gums, and is essential in maintaining healthy teeth.

When a dentist cleans the teeth, they use special tools and the process is thorough. You might feel vibrations and slight discomfort.

Scaling and root planing are also known as deep cleaning. This procedure is recommended for people with signs of periodontitis. Deep cleaning involves two steps. The first step is teeth scaling which involves the dentist removing plaque and tartar above and below the gum line and cleaning to the bottom of the gum pocket. The second step is root planing which involves smoothing out the roots of the teeth to reattach the gums to the teeth. A deep cleaning procedure may take more than a single appointment to complete.

After a tooth removal procedure, anesthesia will wear off within a few hours. You will be given pain relievers and antibiotics to ease the discomfort and prevent infection. Temporary discomfort and swelling are normal after tooth extraction.

Only impacted wisdom teeth should be extracted. Problems such as cysts within the bone, no room for wisdom teeth to erupt, or recurring gum infections necessitate wisdom teeth extraction.

After tooth removal, the load of chewing is affected which puts an increased load on the remaining teeth. This can increase the risk of tooth fracture and wear. Also, the teeth surrounding the gap may shift leading to a misaligned bite.

It is recommended to stick to soft foods such as yogurt, smoothies, soup, etc. and avoid chewing on the extraction site for the first few days after the procedure to promote healing. Our dentist will provide specific instructions on post-extraction dietary restrictions and care.
